Discover Your Future in Academic Medicine with the SSF Summer Research Internship 2023

Are you eager to explore a potential career in academic medicine? Look no further. The Seattle Science Foundation (SSF) is thrilled to present a unique internship opportunity that allows participants to engage directly with a full-time clinical research physician. This immersive program begins with our Mini Medical School Program, where interns spend the first three days diving into the fascinating world of medicine.

From day four onward, interns embark on a multi-disciplinary research project that delves into scholarly writing, academic journal review, statistical comprehension, anatomical analysis, and more. As part of this extraordinary experience, students will be able to dissect real human cadaveric specimens, utilize cutting-edge technology in our state-of-the-art medical facility, and forge connections with esteemed physicians, residents, and fellows.

At the culmination of their projects, students will deliver formal, conference-style presentations outlining their research findings at the esteemed Swedish Neuroscience Institute's Research Meeting. Attendees include partnering neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, surgical fellows, and other healthcare professionals who support our research endeavors staunchly.

The Seattle Science Foundation's anatomical research facility is a hub for examining medical and surgical problems and developing alternative anatomical solutions. We boast a distinguished cohort of clinical research fellows from renowned medical centers, working collaboratively to reshape our understanding of human anatomy. The SSF has published hundreds of peer-reviewed articles in major medical journals and authored numerous clinical and surgical textbooks.

The program will allow students to gain invaluable surgical experience, explore diverse facets of academic medicine, observe live surgical demonstrations by leading surgeons and engage in hands-on anatomy labs using cadaveric specimens. Students will also engage in discussions on medical ethics with practicing physicians, deepen their understanding of medical terminology and tour the exceptional medical facilities at Swedish Hospital.

Upon completing the program, interns will receive a published video of their research presentation, a Letter of Recommendation, a Certificate of Achievement, a group photo with their Internship cohort and a special invitation to SSF's Hands-On Cadaver Courses.

No prior background in dissection is necessary. Participants must be at least 16 years old and entering their junior or senior year of high school. Current college or university students are also encouraged to apply. Internship openings are available at three-week intervals. International applicants must have the appropriate visas before applying, as we cannot provide visa guidance or assistance.

Two sessions are offered: July 11-28 and Aug. 1-18. Each session takes place Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
